L’Autunno is the third part of Kar-a-sutra,
a cycle of four works by Anthea Hamilton.
Kar-a-sutra drives on, continuing its interpretation of the prototype car Mario Bellini designed for the architectural section in the exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1972. In documentary images a troupe of mimes inhabited this proposed ideal living space, and cast the vehicle as a commonplace of blank-faced sociability.
As the seasons change, so do our mimes. We have already met them with the questions ‘What do you desire from a mobile communal home?’ and 'What can ants teach us about living together?' From the focus group of Primavera past to the no-nonsense insect communality of L'Estate let us now assume an atomic view of who and what drives the Kar-a-sutra.
Bellini's car had no engine, and consequently relied on the ambulatory power of mimes. An ingenious mechanism of eating, sleeping, walking – wait, no talking! – playing games, making love, working together, discovering the world, they turn the fuel of the everyday into Kar-a-sutra propulsion. The mimes' footsteps drive pistons, the metronomic signatures of oversquare bores. Their gimmicks turn cranks, and heads, around.
'Is time a necessity?' L'Autunno sets its own course; it is a season hard-wired to a fruitfulness that gives way to inevitable, beautiful decline.

About Anthea Hamilton:
Anthea Hamilton (b. 1978, London) has recently held solo exhibitions The New Life, Secession, Vienna (2018) and The Squash: Duveens Commission, Tate Britain, London (2018) and participated in shows at The Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield; Glasgow International; Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin; 13th Biennale de Lyon; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and Tate Britain, London; SculptureCenter, New York and Public Fiction, Los Angeles. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2016.
About House:
House initiates and produces art in public space. The basis of House is the invitation to one artist to produce a new work. House is defined by production; each project establishes a new identity, design and mode of communication for House. House is currently producing a cycle of works by Anthea Hamilton.
